“Butch and Jerry Milbrandt have plenty of acres of grapes to choose from, but they selected a batch from the Columbia Valley for this Merlot. Labeled “Traditions,” it’s a dark wine with spice, blackberries and a hint of mint in its nose, then more blackberries, dipping down into blueberries, and closing with sweet, carefully managed tannins in its close. Its abundant fruit profile and careful oak management give it an understated elegance. This earned a gold medal at the 2016 Cascadia Wine Competition.” ..-Greatnorthwestwine.com, May 16, 2016

“The Milbrandt brothers’ winemaker Joshua Maloney, despite a record hot vintage, creates a complex and affordable Chardonnay using fruit from the Wahluke Slope and renowned Evergreen Vineyard in the Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley. It spent six months in a program that featured 25% new American oak, which accounts for aromas of wood spice backed by Mandarin orange, ginger, Golden Delicious apple and fresh mint. It comes with an entry that’s round and lush from the surlie aging in barrel, followed by pleasing and long flavors of orchard fruit and lemon meringue pie that are capped by a pinch of mint.”.. –Greatnorthwestwine.com, Nov. 8, 2015

“It’s a very pretty copper/pink color, a mix of Sangiovese and Syrah, and it offers immaculate flavors of strawberry and cranberry, annotated with rose petals and citrus skin. “Several years ago, Joshua Maloney headed up the red winemaking for Chateau Ste. Michelle, but he continues to show his skill with white wines for the Milbrandt brothers. Part of his scuccess is the ability to work with Evergreen Vineyard, one of the top sites for white wines in the Northwest, and this bottling is 100% from that Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley planting. It features an array of aromatics, staring with dusty apricot, white peach, river rock and lemon. However, the nose doesn’t prepare the drinker for the rush of fresh fruit flavors that hint at peach, apricot jam and sugared pink grapefruit. It is harmonius and lengthy as tartness of Granny Smith apple.”.. –Greatnorthwestwine.com, Jan. 10, 2014

“The Milbrandts and winemaker Joshua Maloney continue to offer a wide range of quality wines at affordable prices, and that includes this deliciously round and juicy Merlot. They build this using fruit primarily from estate sites on the Wahluke Slope – Clifton Bluff, Wahluke Slope, Purple Sage, Sundance and Clifton – using some Malbec and Petit Verdot along the way. Aromas of black currant jam and black cherry are matched on the palate. There’s a bit of hedonism that comes with the fat midpalate, yet a burst of cherry skin and flesh provides balance. Butch Milbrandt enjoys preparing his Bacon-Wrapped Dates with Wine-infused Berry Compote as an accompaniment to his pleasing Merlot.”.. –Greatnorthwestwine.com, March 10, 2016

“Joshua Maloney’s winemaking has helped turn the Traditions tier for Milbrandt Vineyards into one for consumers to seek. And with combined production of its five core varieties reaching 50,000 cases, this brand looks to be gaining traction in the marketplace. Three estate sites – Purple Sage, Sundance and the much vaunted Evergreen – contribute hints of sweet lemon, clarified butter, artichoke hearts and candela leaf tobacco. The flavor profile amid a medium body features a clean entry of lemon yogurt, backed by baked pear, vanilla, a line of minerality and a lovely long citrusy finish.” -Jan. 28, 2014

“The Milbrandts didn’t reach far from their Wahluke Wine Company facility in Mattawa, Wash., for these grapes — Clifton, Clifton Hill, Talcott and Wahluke Slope vineyards — and the results showcase dark purple fruit from beginning to end. Aromas include Chukar Cherry, maple syrup, toffee and bay rum, followed by flavors of boysenberry, cordial cherry, French roast coffee and graphite. “Here marks Joshua Maloney’s first vintage under the employment of the Milbrandt brothers. And while the appellation reads “Columbia Valley,” the five vineyards that went into the making of this wine — Clifton, Clifton Bluff, Katherine Leone, Northridge and Wahluke Slope — are from the Wahluke Slope region and were picked Oct. 12. The use of American barrels, not French, help account for aroms of dark plum, black currant, black cherry, dark chocolate and vanilla bean, with a hint of herbaceousness. Inside is a big and dark entry of blackberry, boysenberry and molasses. There’s decent grip to the structure, backed by nice minerality and a finish of lime peel.” -Dec. 17, 2013

The Milbrandt brothers have helped put the Wahluke Slope on the map, and the appellation’s success with Rhône varieties continues with this Oct. 23 harvest of Mourvèdre (80%), Syrah (19%) and Grenache from their three Clifton sites along the western edge of the AVA. It opens with bright red fruit aromas of cherry and raspberry, backed by pinches of thyme, tarragon and chips of bittersweet chocolate. There’s a delicious match on the palate amid a structure that’s smooth, elegant and finished by cranberry acidity. Suggested pairings include grilled meats and Death by Chocolate. “The Milbrandt brothers began planting wine grapes in 1997 on the Wahluke Slope. Northridge, one of the highest-elevation vineyards on the slope, is Milbrandt’s top estate source. This Cabernet Sauvignon (with a bit of Malbec and Petit Verdot) is named after Sentinel Gap, a nearby land formation that provides passage for the Columbia River to come down alongside and around the Wahluke Slope.
